Ohio Minority Supplier Development Council

Gallagher Connect Partners

In 2020, OMSDC is working with Corporations and MBEs to discuss the state of diversity in different industries.

The Council had the opportunity to connect with NMSDC Member AJ Gallagher to discuss the state of diversity in the insurance industry. Rodney Johnson, Vice President of Culture & Inclusion, shared how Gallagher is seeking to make change and advance opportunities.

Given my 20 years in the insurance industry, I’ve learned that people will come to me with their questions: career advice, industry pulses, etc. And whether it’s by phone, by email, in client meetings, or just in passing, there are a handful of questions that come up again and again. Here are the five questions I answer every week.

1. What is the state of diversity in the insurance industry?

To keep it short and sweet: insurance is lagging in diversity and inclusion. Overall, only two percent of all women- and minority-owned businesses are in insurance. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, insurance is lagging behind the national average in representation of black, Asian, and Latino communities. Part of the issue is many organizations struggle with identifying new supplier diversity channels and relationships to meet their goals, achieve sustainability in their supplier base, and reduce procurement costs. That’s where I step in.

2. How are you seeking to improve the state of diversity in insurance?
After seeing years of painstakingly slow progress on the D&I front, I felt the need to take a more active role in shaping the fabric of the insurance workforce. In 2017, my team sought our own solution to the problem: Gallagher Connect Partners. Gallagher Connect Partners is an inclusive network of minority, women, and other diverse certified insurance professionals that were strategically selected based on their unique specializations, shared values and proven ability to best serve our clients’ risk management, insurance and supplier diversity needs. As a team, we support the growth of MWBEs in insurance and help attract more diverse talent to the industry.

3. How does Gallagher Connect Partners work?
We understand that higher targets on supplier diversity spend have left many companies seeking new ways to meet their diversity goals, but they are challenged meeting these goals through traditional suppliers. Gallagher Connect Partners cultivates relationships with certified diverse insurance firms, combining our Partners’ thought-leadership and expertise with Gallagher’s global resources. The outcome is twofold: our diverse insurance suppliers are empowered to tackle a larger scope of business, while our clients improve their insurance and risk management program and create a new vertical to increase their supplier diversity spend.

4. What progress has Gallagher Connect Partners made thus far?

The response to the program has been overwhelming. Gallagher Connect Partners is now a community of 35+ agencies and licensed in 40+ states. Within our first two years, we’ve already created $4.2 million in additional tier 2 spend for our clients.

5. So Gallagher can help Fortune 500 companies meet and exceed their supplier diversity goals through its diverse partnerships. How do we get started?

Gallagher Connect Partners is born out of our shared value system and ethical tradition, which compel us to work in genuine partnership with others. We believe strongly in connecting with partners who believe in doing what is best for the client. The best way to get started is by reaching out to me directly, and we can explore how Gallagher Connect Partners can work for you.
